Abstract

The Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy 7010 is known to respond well to retrogression and reaging (RRA) thermal treatments. Tensile properties and levels of fracture toughness comparable to the T6 type condition can be achieved by retrogressing for 40 minutes at 200°C and then reaging 24 h at 120°C. The improvement in stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is more difficult to quantify and constant crack opening displacement SCC can be prone to large scatter at the low crack velocities associated with T7x and RRA treated material. The results of SCC testing by constant load smooth bar testing and precracked constant crack opening displacement double cantilever beam testing are reported and correlated with microstructural observations.
