Abstract

Influence of preparation method on the catalytic activity of zirconium supported on MCM-41 has been investigated for Meervein-Ponndorf-Verlay (MPV) reduction of acetophenone forming 1-phenyl ethyl alcohol (1-PEA) in liquid phase. The catalysts were prepared by three kinds of procedures. Those were a conventional impregnation method (Zr/MCM-41-imp.), the template ion exchange method (Zr-MCM-41-TIE) and a grafting method (Zr-MCM-41-graft). The specific activity of Zr-MCM-41-graft was markedly higher than that of Zr/MCM-41-imp. and Zr-MCM-41-TIE. In order to evaluate the dispersion state of zirconium cations, benzaldehyde-ammonia titration experiment was carried out. Amount of evolved benzonitrile indicates number of surface zirconium atoms. In the Zr-MCM-41-graft catalysts, higher dispersion of Zr was observed brought about high specific activity. These results strongly suggest that the intrinsic activity of one active site of Zr-MCM-41-graft was higher than that of other catalysts.
