Abstract
Minute amounts of granular insecticides were mixed homogeneously, using a twin-shell blender, with large volumes of air-dried experimental potting media. A technique was developed that minimizes variability in moisture content of experimental media. Bendiocarb and carbofuran were toxic to Otiorhynchus sulcatus larvae in all media evaluated, but efficacy varied between media types. Moisture content, bulk density, and percentage oxidizable organic matter varied between media but did not influence larval mortality significantly. Variability of larval mortality in untreated and treated media indicate that choice of potting media constituents can influence establishment of weevil infestation and efficacy of insecticides.
