Abstract

ABSTRACT The effect of the angle of incidence of ground motion on an asymmetric structure is recognized to be significant. However, the previous studies considered only shear wall-type elements for analyses with in-plane stiffness. These models did not capture the bidirectional structural response exhibited by column-type elements, especially in the inelastic range. A detailed investigation has been undertaken to evaluate the effect of angle of incidence on asymmetric structures considering bidirectional interaction arising in the post-yield behaviour of such lateral load-resisting elements. The study shows that bidirectional interaction is a critical design consideration for asymmetric structures.
