Abstract

In deep space communication systems, phase noise is a non-negligible factor which affects the bit error rate (BER) performance for the low data-rate receiver. According to the power spectral density of phase noise given in consultative committee for space data systems (CCSDS) Proximity-1 protocol, BER performance degradation is more than 1 dB for 8 bps BPSK communication systems. This paper focuses on digital phase-locked loop (PLL) in the receiver affected by the phase noise. The variance of tracking error of digital PLL is deduced, the BER performance is analyzed, and the parameters of digital PLL are optimized to reduce the performance degradation in this paper.
