Abstract

In this work, the actuation behavior of friction stir welded nitinol shape memory alloy (SMA) was studied. A welded rectangular strip was used for actuation studies. The electrical actuation of the welded sample was performed in cantilever configuration along with a bias load attached to the free end. A maximum displacement of 17.8 mm was attained at a current of 4A against the biased load at room temperature. Using finite element method (FEM), the influence of environmental perturbation on the actuation characteristics of welded nitinol has been simulated. The change in actuation characteristics with respect to ambient temperature and air flow velocity is described in detail.
