Abstract

Submerged arc welding (SAW), owing to its higher productivity, is widely used for joining of structural elements in construction industries. However, the high welding current in SAW deteriorates the toughness of weld metal. Therefore, novel water cooled advanced submerged arc welding process has been developed which allows the use of higher preheat current values. Multi-layer multi-pass weld beads have been deposited on AISI 1023 structural steel to investigate the impact toughness and the chemical composition of weld metal at varying welding voltage, wire feed rate, welding speed, nozzle-to-plate distance and preheat current. The results disclose that higher preheat current attributed in an increased the weight percentage of alloying elements viz. Silicon, Manganese, Chromium, Copper in the weld metal. In addition, higher preheat current reduced the heat affected zone and improved the impact toughness through grain refinement. Fractography of fractured weld metal indicated that fine dimpled structure possesses higher impact toughness at higher preheat current.
