Abstract
A theory is given of the influence of non-linear recording on the diffraction efficiency and the image contrast in holography. Exact expressions are obtained for recording media with an exponential characteristic. Numerical values are given for a practical recording medium. The diffraction efficiency of thin phase holograms is compared to that of absorption holograms under the condition of high image contrast.
