Abstract
We study 4 < A < 8 p-shell nuclei in a two-cluster description coupled to collective monopole and quadrupole modes and focus on the effect of the latter coupling on the two-cluster continuum. The calculations are based on the modified J-matrix method which is a microscopic algebraic approach to scattering calculations. All states and resonances in the two-cluster continuum model space below the monopole threshold are calculated. It is observed that the shape resonances are influenced by the coupling to the monopole and quadrupole channels. In addition, these channels introduce a number of high-lying resonances. We have analysed the wavefunctions in terms of the Feshbach formalism to elicit the characteristics of the resonances.
