Abstract

The results of the investigation of the influence of different modifiers (sodium, phosphorus, antimony and strontium) on the quality of AlSi12CuMgNi and AlSi18CuMgNi alloys, which are used for the production of pistons, are presented in this paper. The effects of these elements were investigated with reference to their mechanical and structural properties measured at ambient and elevated temperatures and service performance of the piston. Since strontium and antimony modified alloys are not considered as standardised piston alloys, the research results were compared with the results of standard phosphor and sodium modified alloys normally used at globally renowned piston manufacturer: Mahle, KS.
