Abstract

AbstractWater displacement and pycnometer determined particle densities were calculated for a variety of mine mill waste materials. Generally, both procedures were in agreement with each other. However, water displacement particle densities were slightly less than pycnometer determined particle densities. Particle densities for several kinds of mine mill wastes range from 2.51 to 3.77 Mg m−3. When compared to their mineralogical species composition, particle density values reflected the specific gravity of the dominant mineral found in the mine wastes. As a result of the range in particle densities, time and depth sampling for pipette determined 20 µm and 2 µm size fractions were adjusted to compensate for the variability in mine waste particle densities.
