Abstract

The microstructure of cast 40Х24Н12СЛ steel samples selected from the grates of roasting cars is metallographically studied in relation to their mechanical characteristics. The microstructure of samples characterized by relatively low strength and plasticity has a high content of nonmetallic inclusions and also σ phase at the boundaries of the austenite grains. The viscosity of these samples in the liquid state is also studied. The viscosity measurements are based on the damping torsional oscillations of a crucible with melt in heating and subsequent cooling within the range 1500–1720°C. The results indicate that the mechanical characteristics of the cast 40Х24Н12СЛ steel samples are related to their microstructure and also to the temperature and time dependence of the melt’s kinematic viscosity.
