Abstract
Two groups of eight rabbits each were fed an atherogenic diet (2% cholesterol in 6% corn oil) for eight weeks. One group was given a daily oral dose of 2.5 mg/kg of mevinolin, a potent inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase. The test compound was given by gavage dissolved in 0.5 ml of dimethyl-sulfoxide. The control group was given the vehicle alone. Rabbits treated with mevinolin exhibited significantly lower serum cholesterol levels and significantly less severe atherosclerosis.
