Abstract

The nature of electrical tree initiation in polyethylene is treated with a focus on the influence of the nature of metallic electrodes on the initiation voltage. It is shown that the latter parameter varies linearly with the work function of the oxide-covered metallic electrode. This suggests that charge injection in polymers depends on the oxide layer at the metal-polymer interface.
