Abstract

Objective To study the effect of maxillary protraction in treating postsurgical anterior crossbite in patients with cleft lip and palate. Methods Fifteen patients with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate during their mixed dentition were selected. They were treated with maxillary protraction.Pre and post treatment occlusal function were examined. Results DuringIntercuspal position habitual biting (ICP-HB),the occlusion time (OT),started from initial cusp contact to maximum interdigitization, showed no significant changes. After treatment, the number of occlusal contact points increased (P<0.05),and EMG of anterior temporalis and masseter increased (P<0.05).Asymmetric indices of occlusal force, anterior temporalis activity and masseter activity showed no significant changes.During ICP maximal clenching (ICP-MC),activity of temporalis increased(P<0.05),while the activity of masseter showed an increasing tendency but with no statistical significance. Conclusions After maxillary protraction treatment, the occlusal function of the postsurgical anterior crossbite patients with cleft lip and palate can be improved. But for a better occlusion, subsequent orthodontic treatment is still necessary.
