Abstract

ObjectiveTo determine if asthma severity or the presence of maternal asthma influence newborn morphometry.Study designA secondary analysis was performed on data collected in a multicenter observational cohort study of asthma in pregnancy. Morphometric measurements included birth weight (BW), head circumference (HC), length (L), HC:BW ratio and ponderal index. Asthma severity was defined according to the NAEP, modified to include medication requirements. Statistical analysis included Kruskal-Willis and χ2.Results2480 patients were analyzed. Outcomes are presented in the table. Smoking or BW (multiples of the median) did not differ between groups.ConclusionTabled 1Controls (828)Mild (828)Mod (775)Severe (49)All groups (P value)Asthma groups (P value)Age (y)24.722.324.025.7< .001< .001AA (%)52.158.951.071.4.005.003Cauc (%)36.631.037.820.4Other (%)11.410.011.28.2Multip (%)59.751.656.963.3.006.045Pre-preg wt (kg)70.572.974.473.4.028.383Gov't assist (%)73.280.778.385.7.001.560HC (cm)33.733.633.832.9.032.013L (cm)49.849.549.548.1.060.104HC:BW0.01100.01120.01110.0134.010.029Ponderal index2.62.72.72.6.057.031 Open table in a new tab ObjectiveTo determine if asthma severity or the presence of maternal asthma influence newborn morphometry.
