Abstract
The elastic scattering of heavy ions in the sub-Coulomb region is calculated in the semiclassical Coulomb excitation theory. These results are compared to a recently developed optical model calculation. We investigate the importance of higher order terms, which could not be taken into account in the optical model approach.
