Abstract

Deep rolling is a finishing process and as such, usually used at the end of a process chain. The preceding processes often already have a substantial effect on the surface integrity. However, regarding residual stress, it is normally assumed that the information about pre-existing residual stress is lost during deep rolling, i.e. the pre-existing stress is irrelevant for the residual stress after the process and can therefore be neglected. In the present paper, the validity of this assumption is tested for a range of different combinations of initial stress profiles and deep rolling setups by using finite element simulations.
