Abstract

Superconducting properties of melt-processed (Sm x Eu 1− x )Ba 2Cu 3O 7− δ were investigated by varying the Sm/Eu ratio in the initial composition while maintaining the mixture of RE123 and RE 2BaO 4 in a molar ratio of 1:0.15 along the REBa 2Cu 3O 7− δ –RE 2BaO 4 line (RE=Sm and Eu). A suppression of the height of peak effect and the shift of the peak position to higher fields concurred with increasing Eu concentration. Such a systematical variation was ascribed to a narrowing compositional fluctuation. Experiments also unveiled a dramatic enhancement of the irreversibility line for the sample with the higher peak field, which supported the fact that chemical modulation was a dominant pinning in high fields.
