Abstract

Summary Accumulation of labeled 5-HT and of tryptamine by rat brain crude particulate fraction (14,500 × g) was examined in presence of several chemical agents. Addition of 2.5 and 5.0 μmol per ml of incubation media of Na+, K+, Ca++ and Mg++ rendered no influence on the accumulation of labeled 5-HT or tryptamine. ATP (2.0 μmol/ml) or combination of Mg++-ATP (2.5 + 2.0 μmol/ml) markedly interfered with the accumulation of both the amines. Several L- and D-forms of amino acids, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, 3-indoleacetic acid and a few hallucinogenic indoleamines and catecholamines like bufotenin, N-acetylserotonin, 5-methoxytryptamine, 3,4-dimethoxyphenylethylamine and mescaline exerted no influence on the storage of 14C-5-HT. Non-labeled tryptamine, chlorpromazine, trifluoperazine and imipramine markedly inhibited the accumulation of 14C-5-HT.
