Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic influence of histomorphological parameters and ploidy on recurrence-free survival time in early rectal cancer, after local excision in 47 patients. In this prospective study with a mean follow-up of 35 months (range 0-79 months) a strong correlation was found between the ploidy and the histomorphological parameters. In a multivariate analysis the radicality of the excision and the ‘low and high risk’ classification were of prognostic significance. The DNA content of tumor cells only had a weak influence on prognosis. Both surgeon and pathologist therefore play an important role in the long-term results after local excision of early rectal cancer.
