Abstract

Quasi-steady and transient rolling contact of a driving wheelset over tangent and curved tracks at a speed up to 500 km/h is simulated using an explicit finite element approach to derive creep curves. Quasi-steady curves corresponding to smooth wheel and rail are compared to those from traditional theories implying the steady rolling assumption for validation. Transient curves in the presence of rail corrugation with a wavelength of 10 ∼ 1000 mm are further analyzed to study the influence of middle/high-frequency vibrations. Cases where transient effects must be considered or traditional theories are inapplicable are identified.
