Abstract

Alumina short-fibre-reinforced magnesium composites with a chemically pure 99.8% magnesium, AZ91 or MSR matrix are produced by squeeze casting. The microstructure and properties of the composites in the as-cast condition are presented and compared with the change in properties such as tensile strength, hardness and structure which can be achieved by heat treatment. The fibre-matrix interface is affected by the thermal treatment and the bond impaired. Nevertheless, heat treatment of the MSR matrix composite produces an improvement in the properties.
