Abstract

A corrected formula is proposed for the maximum differential magnetic permeability µdm of steel on the basis of measurements of the coercive force, the saturation magnetization, and the residual magnetization. Statistical analysis of the results given by this formula and experimental data establishes its validity and the corresponding error. The possible range of µdm is determined for structural steel. For a number of moderate-carbon alloy steels, the quality of tempering may be monitored nondestructively by measurements of µdm.
