Abstract
Aluminium matrix composites have replaced most monolithic alloys in applications where improved properties such as lightweight, stiffness and strength are of great importance. In this current study, the microstructural and mechanical properties of heat-treated aluminium matrix composites reinforced with particles of ferrotitanium and silicon carbide were investigated. Stir casting technique was used for fabrication of composites which consists of the aluminium matrix and different weight percentages of silicon carbide and ferrotitanium reinforcements. Before characterization, specimens were heat-treated under T6 conditions. Optical micrographs of heat-treated specimens showed an even dispersion of silicon carbide and ferrotitanium reinforcements in the matrix of aluminium. The microhardness and tribology properties of the heat-treated composites were also improved.
