Abstract

Groove structure has a great effect on the operational performance of the water lubricated marine stern bearings. This paper discusses that the effects of the number and the layout of the grooves on the carrying capacity and friction coefficient of the bearing based the application of numerical analysis with Software of MATLAB. The research results show that the wider the grooves are, the lower both carrying capacity and friction coefficient of the bearing are; the location of the grooves in the bearing is important factor to influence the performance of the bearing. When one groove is located just below the stern bearing, both friction coefficient and carrying capacity of the bearing will be decreased.
