Abstract

An equation for streaming potential is obtained which incorporates the influence of the ion diffusion along the capillary axis and liquid flow inside a porous gel layer located on the capillary walls. The analysis presented shows that the diffusion influence is significant at Peclet numbers less than ≈50. It is shown that the effect of liquid flow inside the porous gel layer is negligible when the gel layer porosity m is low enough ( m < 0.7); however, at higher values of m utilization of the Smoluchowski equation for the gel layer-liquid interface potential determination becomes incorrect and it is necessary to use the equation obtained in the paper for the streaming potential calculation.
