Abstract

This experimental study concerns the adsorption and absorption on surfaces submitted to oscillating mechanical strains. The influence of the amplitude of the oscillating elastic deformations is shown during exposures of FeNi alloy surfaces to very low pressures of SF 6 (5 × 10 −7 Torr). This study is carried out on a sample excited by a piezoelectric transducer observed in situ under ultra high vacuum (UHV) by Auger electron spectrometry (AES). An increase in the concentration of sulphur trapped on the surface is shown when the amplitude of oscillating elastic deformation increases. In any case, with or without mechanical strains, no traces of fluorine have been detected.
