Abstract
Polylactic acid (PLA), a bioplastic, is a hard resin, and has to be softened in order to be used in electric wire sheaths. We added a soft resin to PLA in order to soften it, but this caused decreases in the electric breakdown strength (E B ). In this study, we irradiated soft resin-added PLA with an electron beam and examined the influence of the electron beam irradiation on E B . The irradiation dose was set at 100 kGy. At 25°C, the E B of PLA with no soft resin added was decreased by electron beam irradiation. On the other hand, the E B of soft resin-added PLA showed almost no change due to electron beam irradiation. At 80°C, the E B of PLA with no soft resin added was decreased by electron beam irradiation, as was the case at 25°C. On the other hand, the E B of soft resin-added PLA was increased by electron beam irradiation.
