Abstract

Compression surface pressure-area isotherms of 1,2-distearoylmonogalactosyl- and digalactosylglycerols have been obtained at the air/aqueous electrolyte solution interface. Surface parameters including limiting molecular area, collapse pressure, collapse molecular area and surface compressional modulus for surface pressures greater than 25 mN m −1 have been derived. A rotating quasi-rigid prism model has been used to establish a correlation between the molecular structure, conformation and surface properties of monolayers formed by the two saturated galactolipids. The influence of electrolytes on monolayer characteristics is discussed in terms of an insertion-expulsion mechanism.
