Abstract

Under dc bias field, in thin cell and at high frequency in which the Goldstone mode originated in the fluctuation of azimuthal angle of molecular long axis is suppressed, a sharp dielectric constant peak at the phase transition between smectic-C and smectic-A phases (Curie point) has been clearly observed, which is interpreted in terms of the Soft mode contribution. The deviation of the temperature Tm of dielectric constant peak from the phase transition temperature under no bias field T0 is found to increase under dc bias field E with the relation of (Tm-T0)∝E2/3. The peak dielectric constant εp is also found to be suppressed by the field E in proportional to εp∝E-2/3. These results support that the phase transition of these compounds is of the second order.
