Abstract

We explored the association between primary school children’s ego resilience, failure tolerance, and adaptability in a Chinese school setting. The participants were 231 primary school children (female = 45.9%; from two-parent families = 81%, from single parent families = 19%; first grade = 35.1%, second grade = 30.3%, third grade = 34.6%). Class teachers completed surveys on the children’s ego resilience, failure tolerance, and school adaptability. Structural equation modelling showed that children’s failure tolerance plays a mediating role in the relationship between ego resilience and school adaptability. Additionally, children from lower grades with high ego resilience had a high failure tolerance, which was associated with strong school adaptability. Parents, teachers, and schools can intervene to help children in early elementary school develop ego resilience and failure tolerance, thereby promoting good adaptation to school.
