Abstract
AISI310 Stainless steel was treated with the gas nitriding process at low temperature i.e., 570°C. Comparison studies of nitrided specimens were performed under various metallographic tests like scanning electron microscope, X-ray Diffraction, pin on disc apparatus It was observed that expanded austenite (s-phase) exists when it nitrided to 6 h and after increase in time of nitriding to 12 h a combination of ferrite and more content of nitrogen was accumulated in the subsequent layers. Further nitriding to18 hours it was observed that CrN phase was found which makes the steel more harder on the surface. Wear loss was to be minimum in 18 h sample which showed better corrosion resistance. High hardness was observed in 18 h sample is about 1200 Hv. Sample nitrided to 18 h showed better corrosion resistance, high hardness and minimum wear loss.
