Abstract
The study was aimed to investigate the influence of the CA2/CA-ratio in an application-orientated binder formulation of calcium aluminate cement (CAC) with calcite. Six mixtures containing varying fractions of two calcium aluminate cements with different CA2- and CA contents, calcite and additives were investigated after 1, 7 and 28 d at 23 °C. By means of QXRD the hydration degrees of CA2 and CA, as well as hydrate phase contents, especially AH3, were determined and correlated with the mechanical response under biaxial flexural stress and pore size distribution using micro-computed tomography (μCT) of three contrastive mixtures. The strength values increase slightly up to a CA2/CA ratio of 70:30, above this ratio the mechanical properties deteriorate significantly. The macro-porosity acting as strength-limiting defects correlate well with this threshold, though not the content of AH3 or the degree of hydration of CA.
