Abstract

The influence of 12 different alumina powders on carbon nanotube (CNT) and polymer oxidation was investigated by means of thermogravimetric analysis of alumina based composites containing 3 wt% CNTs or other organic additives. The presented research shows that alumina powders, even if they have a purity of more than 99.75%, have a significant influence on the oxidation of carbon materials. The alumina affected temperature shift of the CNT-oxidation is up to 65 K. Particle size, pH-value, sodium-content and other impurities were characterized as important alumina properties influencing the carbon-oxidation. The findings from this investigation could help to determine optimal debinding temperatures for CNT/Al2O3-ceramics.The investigated catalytic effect of alumina powders on carbon-oxidation is fundamental for all types of alumina composites containing carbon materials like CNTs or organic additives.
