Abstract

The effect of supplementation of diet with high levels of KCl and NaCl on Cs/sup 137/ retention in rats was studied; the level of added alkali metal ion in each case was 5%. Both Na/sup +/ and K/sup +/ increased the rate of excretion of Cs/sup 137/ but also considerably enhanced water consumption. The response was probably due to the diuretic action of the salts rather than to specific ion antagonism. The exposure dose to the animal from Cs/sup 137/ was reduced by a factor of about 0.7 by high salt (Na/sup +/ or K/sup +/) intake. (auth)
