Abstract

Co-rotating, intermeshing twin screw extruders are widely used in polymer compounding and blending. In this work, a fluid dynamics analysis package-FIDAP, using the finite element method was employed to simulate the isothermal flow patterns of a non-Newtonial fluid in the kneading disc region of Werner & Pfleiderer ZSK-30 and ZSK-53 corotating twin screw extruders. Dispersive mixing efficiency was analyzed in terms of shear stresses generated and elongational flow characteristics. The influence of design variables (2 lobes versus 3 lobes discs) on the pumping characteristics and dispersive mixing efficiency is discussed.
