Abstract
Over 12 months, stomach contents of Necora puber (L.) from three depth zones [littoral; infralittoral (to the limit of brown algal growth); and circalittoral (below the limit of brown algae)] were examined. In each zone, and for both sexes, brown algae were the most dominant food item by volume throughout the year. The principal animal prey items varied between zones. Crustaceans and molluscs were important in the circalittoral and infralittoral zones respectively, whereas the diet of littoral crabs was generally devoid of animal prey.
