Abstract

SummaryD-thyroxine enhanced epinephrine-induced alterations in the aortic wall in rabbits, causing an increase in hexosamine content and uptake of 35S sulfate. D-thyroxine alone increased uptake of 35S sulfate. Compared to 1-thyroxine used in previous experiments, d-thyroxine acted similarly but to a lesser extent. As the applied amounts of d- and 1-thyroxine exerted an equally inhibitory effect on TSH, d-thyroxine as well as 1-thyroxine probably exerts its damaging effect on the arterial wall by direct peripheral action.
