Abstract

Reinforcement of carbon fibers (CFs) causes significant improvement of thermal and mechanical properties of various polymers, and therefore application of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites is increasing substantially in automotive, marine and aerospace industries. In the present work CF impregnated epoxy matrix composite was synthesized through hand lay-up technique. Specimens for different tests were cut from the composite lamina as per ASTM standards. The test specimens were cured at 140 °C for 2 h, 4 h and 6 h. Density, percentage of porosity, hardness, tensile strength, impact strength, rates of abrasive wear and specific wear of the cured CFRP sample were determined experimentally and compared with past research results from open literature. Though impact strength of the composite was low compared to the past results, its tensile strength was comparable with that of ASTM A36 steel.
