Abstract

This paper examines the influence of Cu and Sn addition on the corrosion resistance of AISI 304 stainless steel in acid media (boiling 50 wt.% H 3 PO 4 , boiling 65 wt.% HNO 3 , and 30 wt.% H 2 SO 4 at 50 °C). A kinetic study of the corrosion process was carried out using gravimetric tests. The nature of corrosion products was analysed before and after accelerated tests to determine the influence of Cu and Sn addition and the synergic effect of both on the corrosion behaviour during exposure to the corrosive environment. The steels studied present a high chemical resistance to nitric and phosphoric media. The behaviour of AISI 304 stainless steel in sulphuric acid solution was greatly improved by increasing both Cu and Cu plus Sn concentrations.
