Abstract

In this work, we investigated the influence of composition on phase formation, magnetic properties, and magnetocaloric effect of La-Fe-Co-Si alloys prepared by melt-spinning method. The alloy ribbons have a thickness of ∼40 μm. The volume fraction of the La(Fe,Si)13 phase was found to improve considerably with an appropriate concentration of Si. While La and Si reduce the Curie temperature (TC) of the alloy, Co addition makes it increase. A large magnetic entropy change (ΔSm) of LaFe10.1Co0.9Si2 alloy ribbons at room temperature was found. The maximum magnetic entropy change, |ΔSm|max = 1.53 J kg−1 K−1 with magnetic field change ΔH = 12 kOe, shows the potential of the alloy for practical application in magnetic refrigeration.
