Abstract

Patterns of brood production by colony-founding queens of Camponotus pennsylvanicus (De Geer), C. novaeboracensis (Fitch), and C. modoc Wheeler were examined. The presence of workers or larvae had either no effect or a negative one on oviposition by the queens, but the presence of cocoons stimulated oviposition. This regulation may control the worker/brood ratio or may synchronize the hatching of larvae, with the eclosion of new workers to care for them.
