Abstract
Analysis of the composition, structure, and properties of 63 samples of Ukrainian, Russian, and United States coal clarifies their influence on the gross calorific value in the wet and dry ash-free states and the maximum moisture content. Quantitative formulas are obtained for the influence of the petrographic characteristics on the gross calorific value and moisture-holding capacity of coal from different sources. On that basis, those parameters may be calculated with high precision. The proposed formulas permit methodological recommendations in calculating the gross calorific value in the wet ash-free state. This is important in speeding the passage of imported coal through customs.
