Abstract

ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to examine the influence of the chemical composition of mold flux on viscosity and texture of slag film using a viscosity test instrument and polarizing microscope. The results showed that viscosity of mold flux decreased and the corresponding crystallization ratio rose with increase in basicity, Na2O, and F−. The formation of cuspidine might be promoted, and generation of melilite diminished by basicity and F−. Meanwhile, it is of interest that Na2O promoted the formation of melilite and cuspidine, and inhibited generation of pseudowollastonite and wollastonite. To improve the quality of low carbon steel, Na2O and F− of mold flux need to be reduced. Improvement in the quality of medium steel was noted when basicity and F− were reduced, whereas Na2O needs be elevated.
