Abstract

A substitution reaction of chloroacetate with thiosulfate was studied in the presence and absence of cationic polyelectrolytes. The reaction was largely enhanced by the polyelectrolytes. The acceleration did not change when the hydrophobicity of the polyelectrolytes was varied. The rate enhancement was shown to be due to a decrease in the enthalpy of activation.
