Abstract

The impact of variations in the fraction of binary stars producing type Ia supernovae, β, on the chemical evolution of spiral galaxies is analyzed numerically. Even modest variations in β appreciably affect the evolution of the relative abundances of iron-group and alpha-process elements. If a substantial number of the damped Lα systems manifest in the spectra of quasars are due to spiral galaxies, the large scatter of the abundances of various elements displayed by these systems can be accounted for by variations in β.
