Abstract

THERE are numerous reports that dietary antibiotics do not influence egg production and hatchability in chickens and turkeys (Carlson, Kohlmeyer, Jones and Moxon, 1951; Carver, McGinnis, Berg and Bearse, 1951; Halick and Couch, 1951; Sunde, Cravens, Elvehjem and Halpin, 1951; Lillie and Bird, 1952; Petersen, Wiese, Dahlstrom and Lampman, 1952; Sunde, Halpin and Cravens, 1952; and Waibel, Sunde and Cravens, 1952). Mariakulandai, Myint and McGinnis (1952) reported the ineffectiveness of terramycin with or without vitamin B12 on egg production and gain in weight of White Leghorn pullets. Terramycin improved hatchability in the absence and apparently also in the presence of vitamin B12.There have been no reports of the effect of antibiotic in the growing diets of chickens and turkeys upon the subsequent reproductive performance. These studies were undertaken to determine the effect of antibiotic in chick diets of different composition upon growth of pullets to maturity and subsequent reproductive …
