Abstract

A well-timed left atrial contraction increases left ventricular end-diastolic volume and thereby enhances the strength of ventricular contraction.1 This force of ventricular contraction is reflected in measurements of ventricular and arterial pressures and in the rate of rise of pressure (dp/dt) at these sites.2-5 Despite certain limitations in the usefulness of the ventricular dp/dt as an index of myocardial contractility,6 the rate of rise of the left ventricular apexcardiogram (da/dt) appears to be a useful tool for its external evaluation.
