Abstract

In the P waves of 12 patients who were used as donors there was no significant change in duration, amplitude, configuration or axis after cardiac transplantation except in one patient with evidence of shifting pacemaker. In contrast, the P waves originating from the remaining atrial stump of the recipients’ heart decreased in duration from 0.104 to 0.047 sec, and amplitude (from 1.33 to 0.35 mm) with a significant change in configuration after surgery. It is concluded that atrial mass is definitely important in determining the amplitude, duration and configuration of the P wave.
